Innovation vs. Rejection
October 14, 2010
Recently, I was visiting with some family friends who have a cat and a fairly large dog. Although he wasn’t the most obedient canine I’ve come across, their dog still managed to capture my attention.
While on my visit, my friends purchased a gate to keep him from getting in the kitchen when he wasn’t supposed to be. Simple fix, or so it appeared!
Once the gate was in place, the dog had no idea what type of obstacle was in front of him. What he soon realized was that his normal approach of simply walking into the kitchen wouldn’t work, since the gate was rejecting him from getting what he wanted.
Rather than giving up and lying down in the other room, he was determined to make it through that gate, whatever it took.
On his first try, he tried running through the gate using force. Unfortunately, the gate rejected him.
On his second try, he thought he could jump the gate. Again, this didn’t work, since the gate was far too tall to jump. Once, again, he was rejected.
Finally, before his next attempt, he took a few seconds and examined the gate. You can tell he knew that there had to be a way through, it was just a matter of finding it. With no hesitation, he squeezed his shoulders and wiggled his way through the tiny, almost near impossible to fit through, hole that was meant for the cat to go in and out. He finally made it through!
Now, my friends weren’t too pleased with the result, but at the same time, you have to admire his determination in finding a way to get what he wanted.
As sellers, were constantly faced with similar gates that block us from making it into the kitchen. But, just as the innovative canine did, we have to keep pushing forward and think outside the box to find the way to get what we want….the sale!
