Freedom of the Press
The French Revolution led to modern democracy. Terms like left-wing and right-wing, revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements, freedom, censorship, and silencing intellectual discourse were introduced and remain relevant. The texts of Condorcet (1776) and Bonald (1826) allow us to comprehend the debate that occurred in those times.
Historian Albert Corbeto provides a background for the facts and contrasts them, recounting from a neutral standpoint the historical events that had a substantial impact on French and European society. There are many parallels between the past and present controversies. In today's geopolitically volatile world, there is a renewed and disturbing discussion about the nature and limits of various liberties, including freedom of the press.
